Home Automation is becoming another common staple for "New Homes".  I say "New Homes" because even though component prices are coming way down, the integration of these systems require insightful planning before construction begins. Installation after construction is more expensive for obvious reasons. Remember when a basic home computer cost over 2,500.00? those days are in the past as is the concept that home automation is expensive - provided consideration is made preconstruction.

Now, "yes" there is an option of wireless communication between various components but this comes with some limitations to the scope of what you can do with todays systems. Not to mention additional security concerns.

I can remember my dad talking about inviting the kids from down the road to come see the new "Door Bell" his dad installed. Here are a few reasons you should invite your new neighbors over to see:

Audio and Visual: From entry and perimeter security to baby monitors, your signal can be routed to your TV viewing system, to any computer in the house (or linked to a secure web transmission), or fixed monitors. You can even control the camera remotely to span a larger area. Follow this link to an example of two different types of remote video systems.

Illumination Control: We're not just talking about settings from a computer to switch lights on or off in your absence for work or vacation. You can set your motion/timer for when you leave your laundry room with a basket load of clean clothes to turn the lights off after you leave - or as your kids parade through the house leaving a wake of lights on, have them turn off after a period of inactivity. Even convenience lighting in the depths of your kitchen cabinets, or down halls for that midnight trip to the necessary room should be part of your lighting scheme.

Temperature control: It's now standard to have a programmable thermostat to control your living environment. Take that a step further with a system integrated with your home automation package. You'll have unlimited settings to adjust temperatures during times when more (or less) conditioning is needed like meal times and bath times. You can even have the system adjust temperatures based on the current humidity level where you are.

Window Treatment and Blinds: You've seen the "James Bond" movies where a panel will move to reveal a window or huge aquarium.... That's actually possible and not as expensive as you may think. More practical applications for this are bathroom windows or skylight windows. There also are blinds that fit within the window panes that adjust according to heat gain or manually for convenience.

One common mistake regarding the installation of these various components, is planning for the wiring. Some contractors route the wiring of the components (USB, RJ-45, CAT-5, Coaxil, etc...) with the typical wiring for the house. In some cases this is the most practical method. However, considering how fast electronics are advancing, providing easy access to these conduits may prove a life saver down the road. There are several methods of routing the wiring. Baseboards with a cove or removable crown molding are some examples. Discuss this with your contractor before it's an afterthought.
